... issues and tissues with a touch of the spicy from the spirit hag ...

My husband is the most practical man alive. I am not a materialistic person, but even I baulk at his painfully logical ideas on occasion. He has been brought up to feel himself undeserving of enjoyment and 'self-investment'.

The law of practicality reigns supreme in the mind of my husband and his immediate family. His mother makes a lot of "well, if that's what you like ..." sort of noises about our house, which leads me to believe that I have succeeded in creating a unique atmosphere.

I think at least half of her displeasure stems from the fact that some of what we do is not 100% necessary.

Yes, that's right folks, we commit the crime of the superfluous. Plants. Bright coloured walls. A daybed. Decorations !. Things we do not need, but merely like. Things that make us smile. Things we enjoy. The nerve of us !.

My ongoing battle to persuade my husband to expend some money in pursuit of non-practical things has a special meaning to me. His parents make themselves miserable and wanted him to go the same way. Guilt can do things to a man.

I hate it that my husbands' need for practicality stems from childhood role models who encouraged martyrdom as a virtue to let the world see your pious pride.

So, as far as my husbands parents are concerned, if they feel the need to continue to insist that it's selfish of their hard-working son to want a homely environment, then they probably don't belong in our house anyway.

Don't even get me started on the mother in law.

My house is...well..a bit eclectic.  My kitchen is inspired by 60's farm houses (pale yellow, victorian faucet, a red rose wall border with matching curtain, etc) the powder room looks like it came out of a victorian hotel (it had 3/4 plaid walls with a border at top then 1/4 paint that flows into the ceiling, victorian faucet and towel rack, ornate mirror and light), my living room looks a bit like a cabin (light tan with one wall with paneling on it, gas log "woodstove") which flows into my dining room that is orange with red molding and a matching (because I painted it myself) orange and red corner cabinet.  The dinning room also has a mahogany finished cabinet, a large framed mirror and my collection of toby mugs that sit in antique cabinets.  My MIL *hated* that room when I first did it.  ORANGE!  Who in their right mind would paint a room orange!?!?!  Funny thing- the other day she spent the day watching the home improvement channel and found out that the "experts" said that orange is a "vogue" color this year.  aaarrgghhhh!

Her house is white with "mauve" carpet....except the kitchen, which is white with like wood floors.....the bathroom is white.....

Luckily, my husband has a knack for completely ignoring everything that she says.

that kind of obsessive practicality is the real mother of invention.  how else to explain the swiss army quitar (10 different necks--all easily foldable--you never know when youre gonna need a bouzouki)...the digital grandfather clock (easier to read! technology does away with all those clunky gears, springs and gongs) or the jet pro paintsprayer/automatic high colonic implement (dont ask)?

Having been a guest in your home, i can safely say that your "habitation adjustments" have not only benefited yourself and your husband, but also anyone who has had the good opportunity of spending anytime within its walls or rambuctious garden. And "home" is its rightful title. Seldom have i been as comfortable (taking in all the multifariousness of that words meaning) and welcomed as the time i spent in your haven. If it is at all possible to be embraced by an environment, than that possibility manifests itself as a reality in your home. "Bean counting" could not hope to measure the benefit or pleasure.

With an endorsement like that, I think we'd all like to stop by and visit!

Or at least see a few pictures of the place....

karma, maybe we can form a club and switch 'murders' like that movie 'throw mama (in-law) from the train'

My kitchen is inspired by 60's farm houses (pale yellow, victorian faucet, a red rose wall border with matching curtain, etc) the powder room looks like it came out of a victorian hotel (it had 3/4 plaid walls with a border at top then 1/4 paint that flows into the ceiling, victorian faucet and towel rack, ornate mirror and light),

it sounds beautiful, karma. i like the idea of a mix of styles and ages based only on what you like, that's what i try to do as well. and i am huge on red roses and ornate mirrors. our house is small and i need all the help i can get with the illusion of space. i have a huge gold gilded mirror in my laundry (of all places), but the laundry needed cheering up (and so do i when i'm in there hehe).

my dining room that is orange with red molding and a matching (because I painted it myself) orange and red corner cabinet

yes, i can see that we have a similar issue here karma. i have a purple wall in the (tiny) loungeroom and a pink metallic wall in the bathroom. your work sounds wonderfully inspiring to me. orange is such a lively colour and a perfect choice for a dining room, as it stimulates conversation and brings a warm feeling to guests.

My MIL *hated* that room when I first did it. ORANGE! Who in their right mind would paint a room orange!?!?! Funny thing- the other day she spent the day watching the home improvement channel and found out that the "experts" said that orange is a "vogue" color this year. aaarrgghhhh!

what a cow. now that it's popular, she'll probably change her mind. and soon everyone will think you copied it from a magazine too !

Her house is white with "mauve" carpet....except the kitchen, which is white with like wood floors.....the bathroom is white.....

karma, it sounds like a hospital with an odd choice in carpet !. phils' folks home is like that, too. clean, sterile, and utterly useful. nothing to indicate joy or personality. it makes me so uncomfortable and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

Luckily, my husband has a knack for completely ignoring everything that she says.

tell your husband i will pay him to teach this to my husband how to do this

king bee, i am asking. i am asking !!!!.

the swiss army guitar ????. you are amazing, you know that. have you any idea how funny that concept is ?. how about a swiss army musician ? ... ten voiceboxes ?

the digital grandfather clock ? lmao !. heah !. why spoil your traditional looking home with an ornate clock face that you can't read ? *rolls on floor laughing*. king, you are too much !

Read the joke I posted a few days ago..... Some Holy Land Humour...... it should hit home

will do, manopeace. i need the laughs ! thanks

and not often enough, i might add

i can safely say that your "habitation adjustments" have not only benefited yourself and your husband, but also anyone who has had the good opportunity of spending anytime within its walls or rambuctious garden

rambunctious is a nice word for 'beat it back with a stick and hope for the best', marco, thanks .

Seldom have i been as comfortable (taking in all the multifariousness of that words meaning) and welcomed as the time i spent in your haven

dare i to venture that may be because there is utterly nothing to do ? hehe. (course, it may have been the wine)

If it is at all possible to be embraced by an environment, than that possibility manifests itself as a reality in your home.

marco, you make me proud of my insistence on living in this funny little house and making it a home. thankyou

and by the way...hi

hi !. you have emerged from uni hell to blog. i am so pleased

you would all be most welcome, citahellion, but it is somewhat of a funny little house. hehe. like me. like me !

Or at least see a few pictures of the place

you know citahellion, i did see that wisefawn had posted a blog a short while ago about a good way to post photos, so i will go and see if i can do so. thankyou for asking, i'm pleased you did. i'll do my best

Exactly!  And, since there is a french door in that room, there is a ton of light that brightens up the whole space.  I guess maybe she had a bad deal with orange in the 70's or something.    I'm also about to decorate my computer room.  I think I'm going to put black beadboard wainscoting and crown molding with the upper half painted in a swirl of oranges and red.  I am then going to build a computer area and a craft workspace out of cabinets (painted black) and countertop (red or orange).  I'm sure she'll have a total cow over that one..... and, I don't care.

you may be right, karma. perhaps she had some of that orange shag pile carpet that always looked dirty-brown no matter how clean it was kept (although i actually think orange shag pile is kind of groovy now hehe).

i love black together with red and orange. they have all these stunning fabrics out at the moment with black & white prints highlighted with red and orange. i just hung some stapled onto a huge canvas in the loungeroom and i love the mix of colours. bright colours just cheer everything up. (including me !). i think sometimes people can be critical because they'd never dare do it themselves.

I'm sure she'll have a total cow over that one..... and, I don't care

i'm pleased you don't care, karma. you seem to have reached the point where she can't get to you with her pettiness anymore. i'm working on getting there !. thanks for your comment .

If I had the cash, I'd get some of the new shag.  Of course, I'd go for one of the crazy colors.  My sister has shag in her "great room".  Not exactly 70's shag (it's light beige with brown tones) but I like the feel of it.

Holy crap!  You think like me!  I was looking at some tapestry fabric like that to make a curtain to go under the counter that I am installing in that room (So that I can store stuff under it without being seen).  That's too funny.

Good luck with that one!  Sometimes it's hard.  She is the type of person who offers to do our taxes for us so that she can see how much we make.  She's a bit too involved with everyone else's business.  It's hard to blow her off at times.  My house feels like an extension of my personality.  If hers is an extension of hers, then she is really dull.

karma, we just visited a friend that was renovating, and he was throwing out this gorgeous 70's shag carpet in great condition, barely used, and it was this deep purple and fuschia pink lotus-flower sort of pattern. i freaked !. i made my hubby carry it home and i am madly plotting some way to use it.

it is !. hehe. i'm really into fabric right now. (actually, i'm planning a curtain in tapestry to go over an open-sided table that i store stuff under !. how funny if we made the same one ! hee hee).

oh, i know the sort. exactly like phils' mum.

My house feels like an extension of my personality. If hers is an extension of hers, then she is really dull.

exactly how i feel, karma. i think anybody can stay 'safe and boring'. it's a risk to boldly display your personality in your home, and not enough people do it for fear of what others will 'think'. but aside from the old witch, i get positive reactions mostly, and i bet you do too. people feel at home in my house, because i do !. thanks for your comments
