... science or sadism ?

Dr. Robert White is a Professor of Neurosurgery and one of the world's leading neurologists. He is also a  Catholic, and a member of the Vatican's ‘Academy of Sciences’, is ‘pro-life’, and is on record objecting to human embryos being used in brain tissue experimentation.

He also cuts the heads off small animals and re-attaches them to different bodies. And now he wants to do it to people !.

In 1973, Dr. White removed the head from an living, anaesthetized monkey and re-attached it to another recently beheaded monkeys body. The resulting ‘transplantee’ was able to see, hear and breathe independently.

Unfortunately, it was also paralyzed from the neck down, due to the inability to successfully ‘reattach’ spinal column tissue.

Now retired, Dr. White is still hopeful of becoming the first person to perform a head transplant on a human being. (He refers to his operation as a ‘full body transplant’, believing that the human ‘essence’ is contained only in the brain).

Imagine having your head removed and grafted onto another body.

I can see the trade in young corpses required to rejuvenate vampire-like ageing actress becoming an instant boom industry.

And how long could you potentially stay alive, assuming you could procure a new ‘bod’ every seventy or so years ? ... and what of your brain ?. The mental picture of a sexy 25year old body with a wrinkled prune of a head and Alzheimer’s to boot is not a pretty one.

What would qualify one for such a ‘procedure’ anyway ?. Would there be stringent medical testing or would it be a free-for-all for anyone who figures that a whole new bod will do better than trying to take care of the one you already fucked up ?.

And you could have a limp. Or a pungent body odour. You might be really hairy. You would have someone else’s feet. Ewww !. Assuming you could actually walk, that is.

And could you choose the new body ?. Could you specify in advance that you’d like to be young, fit and healthy ?. (The thing about young healthy people, of course, is they they’re generally alive), so where would they get so many young healthy corpses ?.

If they waited for folks to die of natural causes or from accidents or illness, like with other transplants, they’d be left with a bunch of clapped-out dead people whose bodies were no good for anything. Besides, one young healthy body could save 5 or 6 people with organ transplants instead of just one whole body.

Still, one good thing could potentially come out of this. It could spell the end of the virulent Viagra spammers. Who needs Viagra when you can just whip on a new hard young bod to match your millions and keep your trophy bride ‘seen-to’ when she’s not busy screwing the gardener ?.

It is amazing how clever people do stupid things in the name of science. That is sick.

I think it is a bunch of bunk, frankly. MAYBE he got the head attached and blood flowing. There's even a more vague chance that he got it done so that the monkey could still see and hear, considering the eyes and ears are in the head.

I don't believe it ever breathed on its own, though, and I think if he said it did he was probably lying. In order for that to be true he would have had to have connected the brain to the spinal cord. People like Christopher Reeve who have severed spinal cords aren't able to breathe again on their own, and are confined to the kind of respirator he had to use.

If he could do what is claimed above I find it hard to believe he isn't working 24/7 to magically fix the spinal cords of people who are really suffering. Buncha hooey, in my opinion. A head transplant would be one of the biggest stories in medical history, and this guy's entry in wikipedia is barely a footnote.

A sicko quack, imho. I don't have a problem with animal testing, but this guy should have been kicked in the head for this. If he was interested in helping people he'd have been working or real cures for real problems. He could have been working to help people who really need their spinal cord regenerated. Instead he's doing the mad scientist thing like some twelve year old, and killing perfectly good test animals to do it.

If your head didn't age his silliness would make sense, like you say. Given that most people can't live much past 70 without their mind going, I kind of doubt you'd ever need more than one body transplant. Most elderly people have a hard time recovering from heart surgeries. Imagine the trauma from having your head removed. Anyway, I read that the monkey in question lived for "hours". Not much in the way of life extension.

Mig, this is Baker's unwitting humor toward me!!

Definitely Sadism, and if I venture into this macabre it would be masochism--or if you prefer arrant desperation!

btw, what ever happened to your crazy but funny icons?

I just hope that they don't figure out how to preserve us for eternity just as heads in jars like on Futurama. I can just imagine the "right to life" crowd not allowing me to die just because my body does. Clearly God probably would've wanted me to live in a jar.

On that note.
I think I've got a pretty decent body, and not a very good life insurance policy so in the unfortunate event that I'm killed but the body is still in good shape I'll allow my next of kin to sell it for whatever they want. The recipient must keep all current tattoos and piercings however.

If anyone's interested I'll send pictures from the neck down with measurements for an application fee of $10,000.

i don't want to be a man. ever. even from the neck up. imagine me with your body alphonse ?. oh dear. nah. i'd just have you stuffed, i think. taxidermy ted.

stevendedalus, i thought i was beginning to annoy people with those so i stopped. shall i reprise them ?

but i read about him in readers digest, baker. so it must be true, right ? hehe. ok, i'll stop being silly, i really did read this reported as fact in readers digest. so they're no literary giant, but they do generally (i said generally) fact check. but yes, true or not, i'm still gagging over the idea.

taxidermy eh? Well, only if I'm posed in a very suggestive manner.
