... issues and tissues with a touch of the spicy from the spirit hag ...
(aka be careful who you're nice to, kiddies !!!!)

whilst stuck waiting in an understaffed public office recently, i read a "spiritual" magazine that suggested performing "random acts of kindness" as a way to help bring about "inner peace"

i have been somewhat short on inner peace lately, so i figured i would give it a go

acting on the advice of said magazine, the next time that i found myself driving on a "tollway", i paid the toll for the car behind, as well as my own, as i passed through the tollgate. the man collecting the tolls said i was a "very thoughtful lady" !!!!. then he wished me "a very happy day" and gave me a huge cheesy smile as i drove off !!!!

(it became obvious that the magazine was onto something, here)

i was chuffed !. it felt absolutely great and i resolved immediately to do so again when i was next able. this resolve lasted until the vehicle whose toll i had paid caught up to me at the next traffic lights, containing a man i guessed to be in his late-sixties. he gave me a big fatherly wave, which i returned. he then mouthed "thankyou" at me as the light changed and i began to drive away

still happy, i continued on my smiling way until i realised that ten minutes and several turns had passed, and the guy was still behind me

right behind me

when he realised he had caught my eye, he began motioning in a leery way for me to "pull over" to the side of the road

when i appeared not to get his point, he kept doing it !!!!

it was all kind of yucky and clearly no longer fatherly !!!!

ewwwww !

fortunately for me, my would-be suitor realised his mistake quite quickly and was not persistent, so my virtue remained intact. (this, in fact, proved reassuringly easy hehe) ... but i learned an old lesson in a new way that day:

no matter what you do, no matter how innocent or well-meaning you are, despite all good intentions and purity of motivation ... there will always be someone who takes you the wrong way ...

... or wants to

I can't believe this...I tried to stop and fix the "n" and make it an "m" and of course it was too late. Talk about seeming to be a conversation crasher. I apologise for using this up for my stupid mistakes

it's ok, illusivedreamer. i have done this before. the compulsion to correct oneself can be very overpowering !. don't worry, and anyway, i think you have lovely manners now !

I once helped a newly met "friend" (a 30 year old woman with 5 children, who was working as a telemarketer) get a MUCH better job as a jr. loan officer for the mortgage broker i used to work for. On my recommendation alone, he hired and trained this woman, who was then able to get a loan officers license and is now making 5 times what she used to, and working half the hours she used to.
Notice i said the mortgage broker i "used" to work for? A few months after she was hired, i was considering going to work for a different company, one of his competitors. I hadnt really made up my mind, though, and was hoping that the issues i had with this broker could be resolved without me taking the drastic action of quitting. I did, however, work for this other company for TWO WHOLE DAYS, (days i wasnt scheduled to work for him, btw, so its not like i took time off to do this.) I then decided i was better off where i was, and gave up the notion of quitting for "greener pastures." I made the mistake of trusting this co-worker, (and friend, or so i thought) with this information.

About 2 weeks later, someone repeated something i had said to the boss about her out of context. It was said in a joking manner, but repeated by this third party as a serious allegation. I wont bore you with the details, but needless to say, my so called "friend" took it the wrong way. Did she call me about it? Nope. Did she ask me to clarify the comment? Nope. Did she even ask the boss if i had really said what this other employee claimed i had said? Nope.

She told the boss i had been working for a competitor behind his back. I was terminated.

Now heres the real kicker. When i applied for unemployment, they agreed that my boss had no good reason to fire me for that, and my claim was allowed on that portion. However, they also said i had "no good reason" to quit the OTHER job, the one that i worked 2 days at, and my claim was disallowed because of that. I am in the process of appeal on that, but who knows...all i know is that she kicked me when i was down, i have serious health problems and this left me with NO income for a time.

I hate to come off as bitter, but i am. I have come to despise people in general, in my entire life i can think of only 4 or 5 individuals who have even remotely been worth the effort ive made to befriend them. With those few exceptions, everyone ive ever done favors for or went out on a limb for has kicked me in the teeth. Ive had "best friends" fuck my husband. (my first husband.) Ive had so called friends steal from me. Lie to me and about me.

random acts of kindness?
i'll pass, the last act of kindness i performed got me backstabbed and fired from my job.

Aren't people just precious?

little_whip, if there is anyone out there who still thinks that welfare recipients have it easy, or have a choice, i recommend they go see for themselves like i just did. i recently went with a friend to a welfare office here in australia. it was staffed by a bunch of inhuman robots who recited rules from a computer screen and had no personal interest in their clients' wellbeing whatsoever.

the amount of "dancing through hoops" they required for even the most basic of transactions was enough to drive any normal person insane. listening to this smug, overpaid, condescending "caseworker" fat-cat talk down to my companion made me understand why the furniture is screwed down in those places. i felt like flinging a few chairs around myself. i felt ill by the time i left.

and i agree with you on the way some people can use your kindness against you. i guess kindness is becoming just another currency to be exploited in this world.

thanks for your comment, it added an extra dimension to this issue that i hadn't covered, and it really made me think

little_whip, it is very different here, you're right. we pay income tax, but monies are allocated on a state and then local level, and so on. employers are required to contribute around 7% of the average workers' salary into a superannuation fund to be preserved until retirement age 65, but no contributions are made towards any type of unemployment insurance. there isn't any set amount of time that unemployment benefits can be collected for, but of course there is an aggressive stance towards "long term unemployed". these benefits are also means tested, and there is a qualifying period that extends dramatically if you voluntarily left your job (no matter what the reason was).

australia is certainly becoming a smaller version of the "welfare way of life" you describe. we have third and fourth generation australians being born into housing estates and lifetime poverty, and australia also seems to be similar in our tendency to blame the victim for their misfortune. the fact that nobody wants to live in poverty escapes some politicians. amazing.

i hope you do get your benefit. i don't think you did anything wrong at all. i would probably have done the same thing myself if i was offered a chance to improve my life in some way. i think you were very wise to investigate the new job first. all you were doing was looking out for yourself. it's just a shame that your bitter "friend" decided to use something you told her in confidence against you.

she has suffered the loss of your respect and friendship, little_whip, and i imagine that to be a blow indeed to anyone who befriended someone as empathetic and real as you are. serves her right, i'm sure it wasn't worth it.

thanks again for your insight and comments.

i am reminded of the movie "pay it forward" and i dont want you to get knifed by a 10 year old, vanessa....so make sure to only help horny old men, because their weapons arent nearly as sharp.

i appreciate your smut-tinged concern, jesse my sweet. but selecting specifically horny old men would remove the "random" portion of the "random acts of kindness", no ? ...yet, i don't particularly want to get knifed by a 10yo, either.

looks like i have to go back to being a nasty old sow, jess. nevermind
