... issues and tissues with a touch of the spicy from the spirit hag ...

i have the strength of sixty men, i'm over ten feet tall
i'm footed, though i never move, it's said that i can fall

in grand ballrooms i can be seen holding up affairs
and i can bring the house down if i crack up near the stairs

... what am i ?

if you know the solution to this riddle, please make me very happy by posting it ... but if you do post the answer, you must post the next riddle to be guessed by the next successful person, and so on. or so i hope.

course, the whole thing could get ignored, too. how embarrasing that would be. hehe. oh, well ... the risks one will take in order to achieve linguistic banter these days apparently know no bounds !!!. somebody guess, dammit

This thing all things devours
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers
Gnaws iron, bites steel
grinds hard stones to meal
Slays king, ruins town
and beats high mountain down

trina, the answer is 'time", although the sun is a great guess, and i think it fits just as well

trina & citahellion, i'm looking at the other one right now ... i'll be back .. i always miss you guys !

The Man's Aunt did it -- there is no mail delivered on SUndays

What if I say it was the sister, because fruit doesn't grow in a garden, but an orchard?

trina is right. and citahellion, you did exactly what i did !. i looked at it and thought "that's too obvious". yay trina !!!

ps: the last one left has me soooo stumped !

Well I would have got it eventually Oh well

One left but just for fun here's a couple more (NO I can't let this thread die!)

With pointed fangs it sits in wait,
With piercing force its doles out fate,
Over bloodless victims proclaiming its might,
Eternally joining in a single bite.
What am I?

Thousands lay up gold within this house, but no man made it.
Spears past counting guard this house, but no man wards it.

and last one (for now)

Five hundred begins it, five hundred ends it,
Five in the middle is seen;
First of all figures, the first of all letters,
Take up their stations between.
Join all together, and then you will bring
Before you the name of an eminent king

That's four to Keep You Busy!!

including this one

Give me an x, I'll stand to face you.
Give me a cross, I'll turn my back on you.
What am I?

Third new one is easy: DAVID.

Hm... The others aren't quite so simple. Darn it.

Wait, wait: the first one is: You are a riddle poser!
Okay, I only say that because the riddle talks about "it" this, "it" that, then asks "what am I?" which clearly refers not to the previous "it", but to the speaker.
For a more standard answer, I'll have to think a bit longer.

Actually, mig, I totally missed the whole "mail delivery" angle; I would think nothing of going to the mailbox on Sunday, because I don't pick the mail up regularly every day, so there's a pretty good chance there'd still be something in there on Sunday anyway.
on Sep 16, 2004
I check the mail every afternoon - pretty much as soon as I hear the postie's bike - Yes I have NO life and the exciting part of my day is checking the mail -- Elana likes the junk mail

David is right - I really liked that riddle when I first read it.
on Sep 18, 2004
For the first one, I'll say it's a stapler.

Still thinking about the others.

That's four to Keep You Busy!!

thankyou so much trina !. i'll scroll down now and see what work our puzzling friend citahellion has done on these so far ...

Third new one is easy: DAVID.

another one bites the dust !

Hm... The others aren't quite so simple. Darn it.

well done trina ! citahellion, you know you can do it

Wait, wait: the first one is: You are a riddle poser!

such cheek ! hehe. i love this thread.

you sound rather like me, citahellion. sometimes it starts falling back out the other end before i get to it !.

I check the mail every afternoon - pretty much as soon as I hear the postie's bike - Yes I have NO life and the exciting part of my day is checking the mail -- Elana likes the junk mail

well, trina, at least now i know junk mail is good for something ! (and your life is far more interesting than mine !. just ask elana !).

David is right

well done again, citahellion. it is fast becoming my life ambition to stump you ! (see, trina ... what was i saying about me being a bore ? hehe)

For the first one, I'll say it's a stapler. Still thinking about the others

i'm sure you're right, citahellion. we'll wait for for trina to confirm it

Thousands lay up gold within this house, but no man made it. Spears past counting guard this house, but no man wards it.

i think i have this one, guys !. is it a beehive trina ?

ok, back to thinking about the rest ...

Stapler

Good going Guys

Stapler

Beehive are correct!!!

yay ! trina, at last i beat citahellion to a riddle !. (even if it was probably only beacuse he was asleep !)

Give me an x, I'll stand to face you.
Give me a cross, I'll turn my back on you.
What am I?

trina, i have tried and tried with this and i cannot get it !!!! it's driving me demented !

then I guess you'll kick yourself - when citahellion gives up I'll tell you
on Sep 20, 2004
Good going, mig, I knew as soon as I saw you say "beehive" that it was the right answer. I'd been thinking along the lines of an egg or a henhouse, but those only fit half the riddle.

Trina, the only idea I have for your last one is 99, because 9x9 = 81, while 9+9=18 (81 backwards). Which seems pretty weak, but it's all I've got.

thanks, citahellion . i was on henhouse or similar for a while too, due to the 'gold' reference/eggs.

Ohh I wish I had read this thread since the beginning!! Lot's of fun!! I get the same answer as cithellion 81/18.....is it right?

Here's one that has stummped me for ages...

If people told the truth more often, I'd make more money. What do I do?

If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them.....
on Sep 20, 2004
Citahelion is correct once again -- 9x9=81 and 9+9=18

and now we're out of riddles.

(apart from Lengirls -- does she know the answer? How do we know when we're right?)
