... issues and tissues with a touch of the spicy from the spirit hag ...

i have the strength of sixty men, i'm over ten feet tall
i'm footed, though i never move, it's said that i can fall

in grand ballrooms i can be seen holding up affairs
and i can bring the house down if i crack up near the stairs

... what am i ?

if you know the solution to this riddle, please make me very happy by posting it ... but if you do post the answer, you must post the next riddle to be guessed by the next successful person, and so on. or so i hope.

course, the whole thing could get ignored, too. how embarrasing that would be. hehe. oh, well ... the risks one will take in order to achieve linguistic banter these days apparently know no bounds !!!. somebody guess, dammit

What's black and white and red all over?

Capt. over and out!
on Jul 14, 2004

You may have seen this before but it's a good one:

3 guys go to a hotel. The front desk clerk tells them a room will cost $30, so they each pull out a ten dollar bill, pay, and go off to the room.

The hotel manager tells the clerk that rooms are actually $25 tonight, not $30. So the clerk goes to the room to give the 3 guys their $5 change. The guys take a dollar each and let the clerk keep $2 as a tip.

How much did each guy pay for the hotel room? 10-1 = $9. So 3 guys paid a total of 3 * 9 = $27. The clerk kept $2 change as a tip. That's only 27+2 = $29.

Where did the extra dollar go?

What's black and white and red all over?

In the words of Peter Coombe "a newspaper mama newspaper mama newspaper mama everyday"

As for DSH's riddle - I'm stumped
on Jul 14, 2004
That's not a riddle, that's an exercise in poor accounting skills.

To illustrate what I mean, let's say that the clerk kept the entire $5. Then each guy paid $10 for the room, so 3 * $10 = $30. The clerk kept $5 as a tip. $30 + $5 = $35. Where did the extra $5 come from?

If you say "Why the heck would you add the $5 the clerk kept to the $30 the guys paid?" then you are showing good sense. Adding what someone kept (a credit) to what someone paid (a debit) is wrong. One has to be subtracted from the other.

To come at it another way, the disposition of the original $30 is as follows:

$25 in hotel till
$2 in clerk's pocket
$3 in tenants' pockets
-----
$30.

The $27 that the tenants paid is already distributed $25 / $2 (hotel/clerk). Adding the $2 in again is improperly double-booking that money.

Just to beat that one into the ground a little further, why focus on the clerk?
3 guys paid a total of $27. The manager kept $25. That's 27+25 = $52. Where'd the extra $22 come from?

Anyway, since I answered that one, here's another riddle....

I welcome the day with a show of light,
I steathily came here in the night.
I bathe the earthy stuff at dawn,
But by the noon, alas! I'm gone.
on Aug 09, 2004
See I'm thinking dew - you know frost on the ground in winter and just wet grass in summer
because when the sun comes up you can see it reflected
it occurs by the nighttime
it covers the grass
and it dries before noon
on Aug 09, 2004
When I first read this in July I was thinking the moon - but I decided that was wrong and I kept checking back and noone said anything until last night/this morning - but I think its dew - if I'm wrong I'm gonna look like a noob again though - second time today

PS - I hope this thread does get resurrected - it's always been my favourite

Sorry, I was off kicking some medieval ass in Disciples II. (Which I am really enjoying--free plug for Totalgaming.net, it rocks!)

Anyway, yes, trina, you are correct! (And you too, zoo.) Dew it is. Now which of you is going to post the next riddle?

p.s. Did you like my explanation of DsH's riddle? Was it clear enough?
