well, as the crowe flies ... 20 odd minutes of bumps, anyway ;)

we have the, er, honour of living some 20 minutes away from russell crowe. this was something i actually did not know when we moved here. it did not, however, take me long to find out.

just weeks into our residence here, my (visiting) mother ran shrieking at me, local paper held aloft like a trophy, gesturing wildly towards the opened 'entertainment' section and making loud noises about "seeing russell's band".

needless to say, this excursion did not happen. it's not that i have anything personal against russell himself. that would be silly, considering i have never met the man. it's just that, to australian women, russell crowe is simply not that unique.

in fact, you just need to visit any local music venue, watering hole or beach to find yourself three-deep in russells', each one barely distinguishable from the next.

russell crowe is what i refer to a "a real man". he typifies the salt-of-the-earth australian man: loves his football, enjoys live music and mates, dresses how he damned well pleases and doesn't take crap from anyone.

i'm sure russell crowe knows that the international media make a big deal about photographing him in the same shirt a few days running, and i'm just as sure that he doesn't give a shit what they think. i guess he just can't see the point in wasting time and money trying to impress people he doesn't know, and frankly, i can't either.

it's wonderful to think that a man who could make his home anywhere in the world chooses to marry and raise his family in the beautiful country in which he himself grew up. as locals of 'nana glen' can tell you, not everybody likes the 'fuss' that sometimes occurs around their very own home-grown superstar, but everybody likes the man himself.

in a world of highly polished performers, i find it truly heart-warming to see an oscar-winning actor shake his fist in the air and shout until he's hoarse supporting a tiny local football team called "the orara valley axemen"(even if he does arrive in a helicopter nowadays).

and as much as russell crowe is not my kind of man, the fact remains that he is a person of international standing that is damned proud of his homeland and remains firmly balanced by his involvement in the local area. this is a man with a community spirit. (rare ?. oh yeah. and even rarer in a superstar).

as an australian woman, i understand the attraction to aussie men. that rough and ready no-nonsense manner can leave even the most capable woman feeling all squishy. and whilst i will never be amongst those who go weak at the knees at the very sight of the gladiator himself, i will say that i think russell crowe is a damned good bloke.

and that’s high praise indeed, dear russell. high praise in-deed !

I find the tall poppy syndrome that has started on Russell Crowe interesting. I know you said he'a good bloke and everything, but there does seem to be backlash against the man these days, as we Aussies are so good at doing. I realise RC is blokey, and that's fairly everyday here, but how many blokes do you know who are as blokey as he AND an intelligent and funny actor. My Mum has always been one to say that Diver dan (David Wenham) is overrated as far as sex appeal goes and that he is a typical bloke's bloke. But she loves Russ because he's such a genuine and nice person. He can be a bit up himself these days, but I still think he stands out a bit from the drunken yobbos down at my local watering hole.

how are you guys feeling, btw ? any better ?

i guess, champas socialist, that looking at it from such a local level as i do changes the perspective for me. our local paper and news are always very encouraging of him

(i don't know any man as successful as rc with his steady commitment to australia)

But she loves Russ because he's such a genuine and nice person

true. that is the opinion of most of the older folk at nana glen. many of them lived there for along time before all the hoo haa started, and they still like the man for maintaining his ideals and standards

He can be a bit up himself these days, but I still think he stands out a bit from the drunken yobbos down at my local watering hole.

i gather you mean my statement that you can "find russells' 3-deep" ?. that implication was related to this point only: loves his football, enjoys live music and mates, dresses how he damned well pleases and doesn't take crap from anyone. ie: a fairly 'unaltered' view for a world-famous man. ( i could have made that clear, though )

thanks for your comment, champas socialist

i will say that i think russell crowe is a damned good bloke

Reading that left me with a strange sensation in the pit of my stomach. Could be memories of my father saying to someone "I think he's a good black that guy...a really good black".

When he first came to this country he tried so hard to be Australian and using this particular colloquialism seemed to be the ticket. I've never gotten used to it myself though, just like our overabundant use of the word "mate".

Good Ol' Russel is a "good" Australian...shame he's a kiwi, and no amount of appropriation is going to change that!

It would be hypocritical for us to say that we accept people from all over the world and in an effort to be a multicultural society we accept them all as Aussies and to then single out successful Kiwis as "really Kiwis".

i agree, champas socialist. 'australian' is an attitude.

Hell... I like Russell...After "LA Confidential" someone actually had to tell me he wasn't american! Shows how oblivious we Yanks can be i guess.

He reminds me of another famous bloke that lives up the road a bit from me. He's a famous actor and doesn't give a shit about what anybody thinks. Goes by the name of Robert Redford!

i don't think it's oblivion, brian. he really did have a good grip on the accent (guess that's why he's an actor hehe).

MIg...I think I would like visit your town. The last celebrity I saw in person, and I use the term celebrity very, very loosely was Jarod the Subway guy! Great post as always.

Now, I have a question/favor to ask. I have a web site that I have neglected for a long time and would like to revive. Would you consider writing something for it once a month? If you are interested I will give you my e-mail and tell you more about it.
