... issues and tissues with a touch of the spicy from the spirit hag ...
... spunky boys involved ;)

i used to have a really cool job. but rather than whine over that, i’ll instead share one of the better experiences i had back when i was a card-carrying member of the human race ... i had the pleasure of meeting an amazingly talented young australian band, and since they were just finding their feet, they actually had some time to make friends with l’il ol’ me !. (fancy that!).

as is my way, i interfered in their stuff (and they didn’t even mind !). they let me help write a little story thing for the local rag, and over the ensuing few years phil & i kept up to date with their steady rise to fame. "midnight swim" have shared the bill with 'lo-tel', 'motor ace', 'iota', 'platform 6', 'big heavy stuff', 'missy higgins' and 'the church', and those are just the ones i can remember !.

most recently, they beat 'the butterfly effect', 'cat empire' and 'the waifs' (amongst others) to collect the australian live music award (ALMA) for “best emerging act in 2003”, as well as taking home the garth porter (remember ‘sherbet’ ?) australian producers' choice award.

they were further represented at the prestigious 'musicoz' awards with a nomination for ‘songwriter of the year” for (singer/songwriter) sean beaver (he was beaten by daniel johns of silverchair), and a further nomination for ‘best pop song’ (ultimately taken by casey’ chambers’ hit “not pretty enough”).

when midnight swim launched their first cd, "rue de semade”, they received airplay on (national radio stations) 2jjjm and 2mmm, as well as devoted airtime from fbi 94.5, (alternative radio media) netfm, 2glf and (woo hoo .. my old home-town radio) 2ssrfm.

their 2nd cd, entitled "catacombs" is just finished, and, because i asked, they let me put up their spunky photos here ! (i guess their being so easy on the eye never hurts either, huh ?), as well as the links to some really dinky little 30-second samples of all the songs from "rue de semade" to listen to.

the band have specifically requested that i strongly encourage anybody who has any opinion or comment at all on their music to say so here – remember, these guys have never been heard outside of australia, so they would be sincerely appreciative of any feedback. after all, you are their future audience, right ?.

so, to listen to what i think is the future of australian music, go here:

I haven't finished reading your article yet as I am too excited. I have seen these guys SO MANY TIMES. Particularly at the Lansdown, The Sando and The Annandale in Sydney. A friend of mine is mates with Sean from down in the Shire. He has the most amazing voice - a little Jeff Buckley, very ethereal, totally amazing! I am so glad to be able to read an update as I waas only thinking of them the other day. So glad to hear that they're getting the recognition they deserve!

i agree, suz. when we first saw them, i was amazed at the size of the voice that came out of such an unassuming young guy.

I am so glad to be able to read an update as I waas only thinking of them the other day. So glad to hear that they're getting the recognition they deserve!

this is so funky !. they're going to read this later suz (i'm emailing a link to them), so you can imagine how happy they'll be to meet a fan from way back !. you groovy chicky, you !.

they do. they do !. (aside from that little 'logistics' (ie: money) trifle, they would be there tomorrow). imagine. i'd have to come. and phil. and marco. and i adore the word 'den', dyl. sounds so intimate and dark and womblike.

Aren't they lucky to have your support Vanessa?!!

maybe hehe.

thanks joey, suz and dyl for taking time to reply.

You must admit that it is unfortunate though

may i just say, lucky he is male hehe

think I need to email you about the Oz music scene - I'm sure that there are a tonne of people we know in common. I used to date a guy from one of the reasonably recognisable Oz bands that you mentioned in the article. This is getting weirder and weirder by the minute...

this is utterly bizarre !. i don't know people in those other bands, but omg !. how exciting. i have your email address hehe
