... how to emerge ill-equipped (if at all) in 500 years time ;)

Time Travel Fund is a real company. Their concept is that people living far into the future will be one day able to ‘retrieve’ you from your current frame of reference (their past - your present) and bring you into the future (their present - your future).

For the nominal fee of $10, an unspecified ‘percentage’ is placed into the fund, and the remainder is used for “website overheads, covering legal fees, paying for your certificate, and maintaining the database of members”.

According to their website, “you make a small contribution to the fund, and in a few hundred years that small amount grows to a very large amount”.

How ?

As long as the interest earned out paces inflation and taxes, the money will eventually build to where the costs of retrieving, rejuvenating and supporting you are fully covered”.

('As long as' being the operative words). So then what happens ? ... Oookay, well, here’s where it starts to get sticky.

“From that fund, moneys will be taken and used to retrieve you, perhaps seconds after you join, perhaps even moments before your recorded death, perhaps some other point in your lifetime”.

Hmmm ...

"Further, the fund may even pay to have you "rejuvenated" medically (assuming this is scientifically possible at that time,) and support you financially for a number of years".

It gets better ...

"Retrieving you just before the moment of death is just one possible scenario, but one that would avoid any Star Trek(TM) type paradoxes. There are an unlimited number of other possibilities, and we do not know what they will do, we can only make reasonably informed guesses".

Yes. Course we can. Guesses. Super effort, that.

"There are no guarantees. None whatsoever. This is pure speculation, but it is a chance. Should something happen such as the people of the earth bombing themselves back to the stone age, you probably won't be retrieved'.

I see. Bummer !

Perhaps a "clone" of your body will be grown and inserted back in time to your point of death to take your place for the funeral".

Nassssty !

"The fund is not just limited to the living; you can contribute for a deceased loved one".

Dodgy ?

"They could be retrieved moments before their recorded death, just in the scenario above, or some other point in their lifetimes, and you meet them again in the future. The beauty of Time Travel used in this way is that it doesn't matter if they have already died or not. It's all relative".

It’s all relative !. Get it ... relative ? hehe

"The other person must be a close family member. Sorry, but we don't want you bringing Adolf Hitler or someone else evil like him back".

Oh, bother. There goes my plan. Criminy !

The scary thing is, they’re utterly genuine. All quotes from: Link

Mignuna,

So they are not just trying to fool others out of money...they acually believe in the possibility...?..Even if time travel is a possibility....which I highly doubt....Isn't it cheapening the meaning of life by taking away our choices our fate...destiny... by giving us the ability to cheat time...cheat death.
I will be keeping my $10 and using it the best I can in the present.....

You always find the most interesting subjects to throw in the pan, Mignuna.

yes, crusaders, apparently they are utterly serious !

i agree wholeheartedly, crusaders. we'd be much better off just accepting our mortality as part of the natural order of things.

I will be keeping my $10 and using it the best I can in the present

as will i, crusaders

You always find the most interesting subjects to throw in the pan, Mignuna.

i tend to get interested in things and then lose my objectivity on how interesting they are !. thankyou crusaders. i do appreciate your liking my 'weird' little stories. i do enjoy writing them

But what if I'm Mussolini's grandson? I want my gramps back! He was always nice to me!

And even if I'm not Mussolini's grandson, what makes them think my brother isn't the very incarnation of evil?

More of me?? heavens, no! I am unique, just like everyone else is. But I do have two brothers and a sister. My older brother, who is invariably the one I mean when I say merely "my brother", is equally brilliant in his own way. (My little brother is also smart as a whip (whatever that really means...) but doesn't show it off as well, at least not around me. And my (younger) sister is a genius of at least one variety.) But he, being the eldest of us, also has his own interesting set of foibles. (I suppose we all have our own sets, but mine at least are much less interesting than his. I am an encyclopedia of grammar and punctuation, he is a repository for all things pyrophoric. That sort of thing. (Though we do both like big words.))

He was the one who came up with the "40, plus or minus 10%" expression for how old he is (and how old I am, now.) (Which I will remind you again applies to me for another 6 years, if you want to have another go at figuring out my age. )

Hey, no help from the peanut gallery!
on Sep 17, 2004
(40, +/- 10% = somewhere between 36 and 44, an 8-year range. I am 6 years from the end of that range, so I must be 44 - 6 = 38.)
on Sep 18, 2004
38?

thankyou xtine !

Hey, no help from the peanut gallery!

hehe citahellion, now i know. now i know !

so I must be 44

yes. you must be

I guess I should have parenthesised that expression...

Actually, while they may be serious in their presentation, I doubt they're serious in fact. They claim a "percentage" goes into the fund; in theory, they could put a dime in (1%) and be fulfilling their contractual obligations, and thus, be spared any substantial allegations of fraud. And by offering to bring back dead loved ones, too, they greatly increase the chance that the suckers they DO get will invest many times.

So, here's MY presentation: for a contribution of only $10, you can join in the greatest financial coup of all time. The first $20 I receive will place myself in the time travel fund twice; through a little subterfuge, I will arrange to have myself extricated, then moved back to the time of the conception of the Brooklyn Bridge. I will then finance its construction, and share the resultant profits among my investors.

Sound cool?

no, i should have !. never fear. that of mine should have been a . ugh ! i hate these smiley things. you're 38 (and i won't add any type of superfluous thingy to the end this time).

They claim a "percentage" goes into the fund; in theory, they could put a dime in (1%) and be fulfilling their contractual obligations, and thus, be spared any substantial allegations of fraud.

gideon, my suspicions exactly !

Oh, but wouldn't it be cool if it were possible? Maybe not the bringing back from the dead part, but the whole time travel idea? I've always been fascinated with it all. Have you ever seen the movie Somewhere In Time? But then again, maybe dreams are our way of traveling through time. I visit many people that I miss in my dreams. And I'm rambling again.
Interesting post!
