... i'm far too whiny to be a boy !
Published on August 14, 2004 By mignuna In Blogging

hello, my name is miggy, and i am a girl.

whilst that may not be news to some of you, it has come to my attention that we have a spate of female ju users whose screen names have caused other ju users to call them 'bro', 'mate', 'dude' or (my very own personal favourite) 'that mignuna guy".

whilst recently commenting in a blog by 'shadesofgrey', i noticed a similar phenomenon. shades crafted a very intelligent point, and it made everyone assume she was a man !. i mentioned this in my comment to her, and was rewarded by her response that maybe she should "change my name to shadesofpink" !.

and the trend continues. the lovely new blogger 'ravenblack' was clever enough to be confused for a man by none other than sal and myself !.

and the fact that i habitually end the majority of my comments with typed 'kissies' has probably been frankly scary for some of the male users on ju. i imagine a reaction something like this: "yuck. some guy named mignuna just said i was lovely in my blog and left me some kisses. i think he's hitting on me. ewwwwwww !"

so chickies, if you are tired of being called a boy for exercising your babelicious brain, come forward and declare your er, girliness. or something. and shades, don't worry about changing your screen name anytime soon. we can just keep calling each other 'bro'. i'm kind of getting used to it, anyway

Yeah, that happened to me. I posted a blog about hating stupid wedding stuff and just wanting to elope, and my good pal imajinit told me not to tell my fiancee because she might be mad and that brides can be that way. Little did he know... Anyway, I always thought "Angloesque" sounded fairly feminine. What man would use an -esque suffix unless he's gay?

!

Oh, crap. Everyone's probably thinking I'm a GWM this whole time. Crap crap crap.

I doubt I've ever been acused of being a girl... But then again, I doubt most female types are going to have the name "Death_By_Beebles" Any way, from the second I read your writting, I knew that you were a woman. Please do not take that last comment in a negative light in any way, it just seems to be some sort of difference between male and female writting.

-esque isn't really that gay.... really. lol

Peace,

That's happened to me, too! But I'm not tired of it, though. I find it endearing.

It seems for me, subject matter of the blogs make me think of the writer as male or female. For instance, if a writer talks about their kids, I'm going to think it's a woman first. If a writer talks about wrestling, I'm going to think it's a man.

For the longest time, I thought Jamie Burnside was a woman (don't take offense, Jamie.) I didn't realize Jamie was a guy until he said 'wife' in one his posts.

I think its been a long time since I assumed a female poster/chatter was a male... I wonder if internet experience has anything to do with how well you identify gender online.

This is a very good post. I've been very cautious as to how I address people here on JU, specifically for this reason. I try not to guess until I've read a few articles/comments and even then, if it's not obvious, I stay gender neutral.

mig, I never mistook you for a man, but at first I did mistake you for possibly Korean. nuna, in Korean, means older sister (to a guy).

Slightly related note - a female Korean teacher in my schoolhouse recently expressed to me her disgust in our textbooks. In almost every case, our textbooks will address male characters (in dialogs) as 'teacher', 'doctor', or some similar term, while women are almost always referred to as 'miss'. Also, in the unit where the students learn vocab about jobs, the professional jobs (teacher, civil servant, doctor, even soldier) are all identified with men. The jobs that are left to the women? Secretary, store clerk, nurse, and housewife! What makes this even more poignant is that most of these textbooks were written and edited by women! I was actually ashamed (a little) that I hadn't noticed this until she pointed it out.

I never mistook mig for a guy either. In most Latin based languages, the ending "a" denotes a female. I woulda screwed up if she HAD been a guy, though...lol

I try not to assume a person's gender. I myself have always had the habit of choosing an ambigious nick. This is because I used to frequent game forums which are predominantly male populated, although that is changing now - women are also getting into gaming. The thing is, on game forums, to reveal whether by post or nickname that you're 'a girl' sometimes gets you unwanted attention and at times, prejudice. In some places, your views will be outright dismissed because of your gender.

I'm so good at posting neutrally (I just keep it quiet, I don't lie) that no one ever suspects unless I tell them.

Hi, my name is Texas Wahine, and I'm a girl.

Wahine is Hawaiian for girl, and is pronounced wah-hee-nay. You see, I'm "Texas Girl"

Mignuna, I never thought you were a guy, and I'll tell you why . . . your little thingamajig says "Mignuna the Australian alien girl" and also, I just get a girly vibe from you.

On the otherhand, I did think Jamie Burnside was a female. Sorry.

Hmmm . . . I think that's all I have to confess . . .

i'm glad you knew i was a girl, death_by_beebles. thankyou

it is a bit hehe !

hi dusk. i'm glad you can sympathise.

It seems for me, subject matter of the blogs make me think of the writer as male or female. For instance, if a writer talks about their kids, I'm going to think it's a woman first. If a writer talks about wrestling, I'm going to think it's a man.

exactly. i think this is what a lot of us are doing.

I think its been a long time since I assumed a female poster/chatter was a male... I wonder if internet experience has anything to do with how well you identify gender online.

that's a good point, historyishere. i think it might.

This is a very good post. I've been very cautious as to how I address people here on JU, specifically for this reason. I try not to guess until I've read a few articles/comments and even then, if it's not obvious, I stay gender neutral.

thanks chiprj. and i do the same thing myself now !

mig, I never mistook you for a man, but at first I did mistake you for possibly Korean. nuna, in Korean, means older sister (to a guy).

unfortunately chip, i'm just a garden variety australian. mignuna is a hybrid maltese word that means 'the lady is crazy". it was given to me by a maltese freind, but i can't imagine why !

The jobs that are left to the women? Secretary, store clerk, nurse, and housewife! What makes this even more poignant is that most of these textbooks were written and edited by women! I was actually ashamed (a little) that I hadn't noticed this until she pointed it out.

eww. nasssty !. although, i have always said that a lot of the 'oppression' females feel comes from other females.

hello miggy, my name is abe and i am a boy.

want to play doctor with me?

wow, thanks abe !. nobody has asked me that for about 25 years. you're on !

I try not to assume a person's gender. I myself have always had the habit of choosing an ambigious nick

this is interesting raven ...

this, sadly, can be true, raven

I'm so good at posting neutrally (I just keep it quiet, I don't lie) that no one ever suspects unless I tell them

i know you are !. you caught both sal and myself out !

Hi, my name is Texas Wahine, and I'm a girl

woo hoo, texas wahine !. when i said that, abe asked me if i wanted to play doctor hehe

Mignuna, I never thought you were a guy, and I'll tell you why . . . your little thingamajig says "Mignuna the Australian alien girl" and also, I just get a girly vibe from you

thanks . i only recently added the 'australian alien girl' thing, as i was getting gender-confusion !

Mig, I may have mistaken your gender but I've kind of gotten into the habit of calling everyone "man," just like Theron in the movie Monster, except that I'm not a woman, nor a prostitute....but I did used to think Christina Richie was cute. anyway, I would like to state for the record that I will accept closing comments with "kisses" "smooch" *smack* etc from males, females, or those who wish to remain ambiguious or have no choice for a variety of reasons, I don't discriminate in the comment section, I'm equally as attention craving for either and all genders.

suspeckted, i remember you making a comment "when did you become vanessa ?". tee hee ! i love it that you thought i was a man. hooray !. at last !. thankyou for thinking i was a man (at least for a short time). actually, i am told i behave more like a man than a woman, which i actually do find complimentary, albeit somewhat difficult to actually live with.

suspeckted, you have just done the women of the world an enormous favour there. i am so impressed that you mentioned chirtsina richie and charlize theron in the same sentence and preferred christina. and i didn't think you were a woman or a prostitute, by the way, but even if you were, i can't say it would bother me. might even be a bit exciting !!!! (my life is so exciting, i can hardly stand it. )

I would like to state for the record that I will accept closing comments with "kisses" "smooch" *smack* etc from males, females, or those who wish to remain ambiguious or have no choice for a variety of reasons

i agree with your sentiments suspeckted, as usual.

I don't discriminate in the comment section, I'm equally as attention craving for either and all genders.

i do try and read everything you write, as i am unfailingly enriched by it. my real-life closest friend is 'notsohighlyevolved' (marco), and he recently said to me "if life was fair, suspeckted would get 50 comments for every poem he writes". you're that good. i just wish i was around more when you post. damned antipodean existsnce !.

Smooches,
High-Five,

ooooh smooches !. i do so love smooches !. here, have one back ! *smooch*

hmmm. high five. i am somewhat feeble and pale for such things (i can almost hear my wrist snapping), but for you, suspeckted, ok

Well I am just as guilty of neglecting the blogs of those I do appreciate and since I'm down to just one or two blogs a week myself I tend to get way behind. Despite yours and marco's praise I'm glad I don't get 50 comments per poem because then I probably would feel much more compelled to share the love. But for now I'll just share it with you and a few others...and no complainin' here.

suspeckted, i remember you making a comment "when did you become vanessa ?". tee hee ! i love it that you thought i was a man. hooray !. at last !. thankyou for thinking i was a man (at least for a short time). actually, i am told i behave more like a man than a woman, which i actually do find complimentary, albeit somewhat difficult to actually live with.

I think I did have some gender misidentification issues, but specifically I was referring to the way you started leaving Vanessa next to Miguna which you didn't previously do. It made me wonder if you were choosing to give up your ambiguity on purpose or if you just wanted to put out your real name in JU land.

ooooh smooches !. i do so love smooches !. here, have one back ! *smooch*

NICE! Most action I've gotten all weekend. High Fives are the shit! But I suppose I could start signing off with that fist to fist frat boy style greeting/salutation.
