Yale graduate Eric Brende changed his life forever a decade ago when en route to Kansas from Boston via bus, he met a gentleman in a wide-brimmed black hat who said he lived in a “Mennonite-style’ community. After the man explained this meant that his community existed without the use of motors or motorized technology, (no electricity, no telephones, no motor vehicles, etc), Brende was intrigued, and found himself proposing that he live with the community for 18 months to research ‘the m...

In the Royal Village of Swaziland, thousands of young women have bared their breasts and danced for the King in the hope of trading a life of poverty for one of royal comfort as the newest of King Mswati's many wives. The 36-year-old king picks a new bride each year at the 'Reed Dance' in a royal ritual that is defended by traditionalists as a time-honored piece of the nation's cultural fabric. King Mswati, sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch, has 11 wives and a fiancee. Mswa...

I was watching the (Australian) television show 'The Panel' last night, and the subject of 'mooning' came up. Specifically, they were discussing the fact that an Australian Olympic swimming medalist had begun to pull his track bottoms down during an athletes' celebration with the intention of 'mooning' the other athletes, and had been 'removed' for questioning about the incident. Apparently, Olympic officials has not been sure what the swimmer was 'planning to do'. As 'mooning' is kn...

In the latest attempt by the 'glamourama' media to make us collectively feel shitty about ourselves, I have noticed that not only are selected female celebs concerned with whittling themselves away to reveal their fabulous bone structure (all of it), but male celebs are beginning to ditch the reality and go for washboard tummies, overstyled hair and buns of steel. Being long accustomed to women bowing to the (now necessary) pressure to remain eternally slim, I at least could once rely on...

My husband is the most practical man alive. I am not a materialistic person, but even I baulk at his painfully logical ideas on occasion. He has been brought up to feel himself undeserving of enjoyment and 'self-investment'. The law of practicality reigns supreme in the mind of my husband and his immediate family. His mother makes a lot of "well, if that's what you like ..." sort of noises about our house, which leads me to believe that I have succeeded in creating a unique atmospher...
